Integrated dredging solutions

Coastal protection

Coastal erosion is a growing problem that threatens the integrity of our beaches and marine ecosystems. At Dragage Maroc, we specialise in coastal protection and offer innovative and sustainable solutions to mitigate the effects of erosion and preserve the coastline.

Natural solutions to protect coastal zones

We create natural barriers to protect coastlines, such as submerged breakwaters and artificial reefs, which not only reduce the force of waves and currents, but also promote marine biodiversity. These structures act as coastal defences against storms and waves, providing effective protection with low environmental impact.

Our commitment to environmental management in coastal areas drives us to develop projects that reconcile coastal protection against erosion with the conservation of marine ecosystems. We implement coastal protection strategies that take environmental impact into account and promote the preservation of the coastline with low environmental impact.

We use geotextile tubes and bags to build safe and durable erosion control structures, both on land and in the water. These techniques can be used to build effective coastal barriers, offering customised solutions for every project.

Possible applications for geotextile tubes

Geotextile tubes can be used as the central construction element of the main structure and the subsequent superstructure. In addition, conventional structures, such as riprap or concrete structures, can be replaced by geotextile tubes.

The applications are many and varied: breakwaters, jetties, dams, dykes, dunes, land reclamation and bank protection.

Durable hydraulic structures made from high-strength geotextiles

With global climate change, intelligent coastal and shoreline protection systems are playing an important role in modern hydraulic engineering. Geotextile tubes and bags make it quick and easy to erect safe, permanent erosion control structures on land and in water. They are a cost-effective, natural alternative to riprap and concrete solutions.

The individually prefabricated elements can be filled with locally available materials, such as sand, saving on core drilling riprap. As a result, and because they are quickly colonised by marine flora and fauna, geotextile containers are a highly environmentally-friendly construction method.

Our solutions are both robust and adaptable, and can be easily installed in combination with other materials. Depending on the size and type of element, filling can be carried out using a hopper or hydraulically by pumping a mixture of sand and water. The possible applications for geotextile construction elements are very diverse, ranging from dikes on land to breakwaters in water.

Benefits

  • Cost-effective alternatives to conventional construction methods.
  • Safe structures thanks to their great adaptability.
  • Fast, flexible installation on land and in water.
  • Green construction.
  • Numerous certifications and tests (BAW, etc.)

Large format coastal protection solution

Thanks to the large-format, heavy geotextile elements, it is possible to build continuous barriers with high positional stability on coastal and littoral stretches. Even in very soft, erosion-prone soils, the system configuration provides stable, scour-free protection.

An erosion protection platform with anchor tubes prevents erosion and scouring under the geotextile tubes. The anchor tubes secure the erosion and scour protection platform and ensure its positional stability.

The geosynthetic fabric used in these pipes, specially developed for coastal protection, is extremely robust during installation and resistant to abrasion over the long term. The sand-coloured material blends in well with the landscape and is quickly colonised by marine flora and fauna, even underwater. Ecological compatibility has been proven both in practice and through scientific testing.

Benefits

  • Economic and ecological protection of the coast.
  • Multifunctional use thanks to flexible system configuration.
  • High positional stability.
  • Simple backfill using local sand.
  • Rapid colonisation by marine flora and fauna.
  • High resistance to UV and abrasion.

Restoring the land and protecting the banks

To sustainably protect a land reclamation area from water impacts during the construction process, an erosion-resistant barrier is essential. Conventional practices, such as the installation of an earthen perimeter dike, are subject to the natural process of erosion. Confining the sand in geotextile tubes prevents its erosion by wind and waves and allows construction to proceed quickly.

The same basic principle can be applied to bank protection measures. In cases where a slope needs to be secured, large-format pipes may be the only economical and safe option due to the height of the construction and this can be achieved in a single operation.

Benefits

  • Durable, erosion-resistant protection.
  • Large construction heights are possible in a single operation.
  • Fast and economical filling.
  • Use of locally available sands.
  • Cost-effective due to savings on large breakwaters.

Breakwaters and dikes

Construction materials for conventional hydraulic structures such as breakwaters and jetties have evolved over the years. From timber constructions to sheet pile walls, to breakwater constructions in combination with asphalt or concrete, a whole range of commercially available construction materials are used today. However, only the use of geotextile pipes allows the use of sand, which occurs naturally on the beach and in the sea, as a construction or filling material.

Whether it is a central structure with subsequent cladding or a replacement of the classic structure in its entirety, geotextile tubes for coastal protection expand the range of available construction materials with an economical and ecological solution.

Benefits

  • Application as a central structure with rear cladding.
  • Large format for heavy structures.
  • Durable, erosion-resistant protection.
  • Fast and economical filling.
  • Material savings through the use of locally available sands.

    Dikes, dams and dune reinforcement

Sustainable flood protection with pipes and bags

Man-made flood protection structures, such as dikes, and natural barriers, such as dune systems, can be significantly strengthened and improved using geotextile tubes. In addition to installing the tubes at the core of the structure as part of a new construction, they can also be installed at a later stage during dike expansion or as filter fill for dike toe stabilization.

Geotextile tubes represent an ecologically justifiable and economical safety measure, particularly for fragile dune systems. Thanks to their sandy appearance and the fact that they can be covered like an artificial dune, the tubes successfully integrate into the dune landscape.

    Benefits

    • Durable, erosion-resistant protection.
    • New constructions, dike extensions, filter stabilizing embankments.
    • Good integration into the landscape thanks to the sand-colored appearance.
    • Fast and economical filling.
    • Material savings through the use of locally available sands.

      Marine walls and coatings

Geotextile bags: the alternative to rockfill

Geotextile bags can be used as an alternative to conventional stone revetments to build safe protective structures on coasts and beaches. Thanks to their high adaptability, deformations of the subsoil and structure can be compensated for.

Combined with the excellent filtration properties, sandbags are the ideal solution for filling sub-caved areas and are more suitable for securing sandy entrance sections than conventional stone revetments.

Thanks to their color and rapid colonization by marine flora and fauna, they integrate sustainably into their environment. Compared to stones, sand-filled elements are robust but also easy to walk on and present a lower risk of injury.

      Benefits

      • Small format flexible container elements.
      • Safe building structures thanks to their great adaptability.
      • Scour prevention and protection without complications.
      • Material savings thanks to its design as a filling filter.
      • Good integration into the natural environment.
      • Anti-vandalism solutions.
